Dr Carolyn Hayles graduated from Keele University in 1992 with a 1st Class
Honours degree in Geography and Geology. From there she went to Glasgow
University and completed a PhD in Applied Geology looking at the deterioration
and conservation of historic building stone. Between 1995 and 2003 Carolyn
was employed by BRE Scotland as a consultant and laterally a senior consultant
working both in the areas of ‘materials technology and performance’ and ‘construction
process and management’. Carolyn worked on various projects, some
of which are summarized below:
- Facilitation of the best practice demonstration
projects in Scotland for UK Government under
the Movement for Innovation (M4I) initiative.
- Research on the use of value management
in the UK construction industry for 5 years:
Project manager for three-year UK Government funded
research
project on value management techniques; and principle
investigator on a two year PII programme to look
at SME involvement.
- Research on traditional building materials
including the building sandstones of the UK;
increasing market opportunities for the use of
lime mortars
in new construction (PII); the service life of
natural stone; the restoration & replacement
of traditional windows in historic buildings; barriers
to the
use of traditional materials in modern construction.
- Research on containment barriers for
contaminated land.
- Research on recycled materials as aggregate
for concrete blocks.
In October 2001 Carolyn was seconded to the Scottish
Executive as Project Coordinator of ‘Pulling
Together Scotland – What’s on in Construction’,
a Government initiative set up to promote Rethinking
Construction, best practice and business improvement
within the Scottish Construction industry. Carolyn’s
secondment ended in June 2003 when she took up a
short term contract as Project Manager at the Centre
for the Built Environment (CBE). CBE provides a central
point of contact for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises
(SMEs) operating within the West of Scotland Construction
Industry and links these organisations to the resources,
expertise, and facilities available within the built
environment faculties of both the University of Strathclyde
and Glasgow Caledonian University.
Carolyn is a Fellow of the Geological Society of
London, a member of the Institute of Value Management
and a Professional in Value Management.
