Dr Carolyn Hayles, Research Fellow
BSc (Hons) PhD FGS PVM

Dr Carolyn Hayles graduated from Keele University in 1992 with a 1st Class Honours degree in Geography and Geology. From there she went to Glasgow University and completed a PhD in Applied Geology looking at the deterioration and conservation of historic building stone. Between 1995 and 2003 Carolyn was employed by BRE Scotland as a consultant and laterally a senior consultant working both in the areas of ‘materials technology and performance’ and ‘construction process and management’. Carolyn worked on various projects, some of which are summarized below:

  • Facilitation of the best practice demonstration projects in Scotland for UK Government under the Movement for Innovation (M4I) initiative.
  • Research on the use of value management in the UK construction industry for 5 years: Project manager for three-year UK Government funded research project on value management techniques; and principle investigator on a two year PII programme to look at SME involvement.
  • Research on traditional building materials including the building sandstones of the UK; increasing market opportunities for the use of lime mortars in new construction (PII); the service life of natural stone; the restoration & replacement of traditional windows in historic buildings; barriers to the use of traditional materials in modern construction.
  • Research on containment barriers for contaminated land.
  • Research on recycled materials as aggregate for concrete blocks.

In October 2001 Carolyn was seconded to the Scottish Executive as Project Coordinator of ‘Pulling Together Scotland – What’s on in Construction’, a Government initiative set up to promote Rethinking Construction, best practice and business improvement within the Scottish Construction industry. Carolyn’s secondment ended in June 2003 when she took up a short term contract as Project Manager at the Centre for the Built Environment (CBE). CBE provides a central point of contact for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) operating within the West of Scotland Construction Industry and links these organisations to the resources, expertise, and facilities available within the built environment faculties of both the University of Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian University.

Carolyn is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London, a member of the Institute of Value Management and a Professional in Value Management.
