Background
Dr David Boyd is Deputy
Head of the School of Property and
Construction at the University of
Central England in Birmingham. Although
his
background is in science and technology,
Dr Boyd is better know for his sociological
and management perceptions of the
industry. His research in this field
has sprung
from working with Construction Project
Managers on the practical problems
of the industry. His major contribution
has been to develop a model of projects
in the industry as complex adaptive
socio-technical systems. Through
this, he has argued against the exclusive
use of the structured rationality
of
formal techniques and has proposed
a new approach to management based
on learning to handle the uncertainty
in the system. This requires all
participants developing a learning
and reflective
approach to their tasks and acknowledging
the informal systems. This work has
developed most recently within the
wider concept of Knowledge Management.
This current project involves working on
real and grounded events from practice
in an action research environment
with the industry. In particular
Dr Boyd
is interested in the way narratives
(stories) are used to learn and pass
on knowledge.
